Hello cats and kittens. I read the Gawker sites a lot (mostly Jalopnik, Kotaku & io9), but have never posted anything on them other than the occasional comment. I wanted to break that silence with... a BRAKE.
What’s this?? It’s a vision of my ideal car... and a sequel to a “Photochop” that I made six years ago - which got mentioned by Kotaku at one point, but I don’t remember where. Check that old one out here:
Anyway, the idea was to make a shooting brake / hatch version of the Mazda Miata, a car which I lust after. My first time driving one was at Mazda’s “Zoom Zoom Live” driving event in the Bay Area back in ‘06. I drove an ‘07 model around the cone course and it was a bit of a revelation. I’d never driven such an utterly FUN car before that, and I was bewitched. I’d always loved cars, but always owned $500 wonders that were falling apart and not especially fun to drive. After driving the Miata, I decided that I would one day have to own one, and that if my next car couldn’t be a Miata, that I’d at least tide myself over with something fun. The next year I got my first “grown up” job, as a graphic designer for a web start-up, and decided to replace my trusty old Escort wagon with something fun. I needed something with some storage ability, but something that would still have good handling and look good, so I bought a brand new Mazda 3 hatch, in the lovely paint color “True Red”, which I wish Mazda still offered. Even though I don’t own a Miata yet, I’m in the family at least, and the 3 is no slouch when it comes to enjoyable driving.
Anyway, one night I was bored and decided to mockup up a fusion of my beloved 3 and my much-desired Miata... A car small and tidy like the Miata, with all the things that make it so fun to drive, but with enough storage to bring my photography equipment or other things around with me. I’d keep it a two-seater, and just have a generous wagon-sized loading area behind me. I’m sure it would add a lot of weight to the car, but it would be worth a little compromise to have such a delightful little beast to drive around. Also, It would have to be a very vivid green, because I love that color. I’ve painted two of my cars metallic bright green - my old Dodge Omni 14 years ago, and my current project car, a 1975 Fiat Spider, a few years back. I think the paint that Mazda used for the last 2 / Demio would be nice on my mutant Miata.
I was procrastinating tonight and needed a little break from a design project I’ve been working on, so I decided to see what the new ND Miata would look like as a hatchback, and I think it looks pretty dang sexy, in an angry frog sort of way. Like my old mockup, I used the hatch from a 3 and reshaped it a little. Mazda are you listening? Make me this car! I know about the whole thing about economics and this will sell / that won’t sell, but hey... pretty please with sugar on top? For real though... if I was a crazy rich person, I wouldn’t spend a ton of money on Ferraris, Lambos, and other opulence. Rather, I would just pay some coachbuilder to make me odd shit like this!
Mazda... PRETTY PLEEEAAASE????
